As always, the closing of the ongoing year gives us the opportunity to reflect on past events and goals that were achieved. TERRE DES FEMMES looks back on a very eventful und successful year 2019, in general, and further appreciates the results of the first project year of “Let’s CHANGE”. We took this as an occasion to discuss this year’s achievements and the engagement work against female genital mutilation (FGM) with patron of the project, Rakieta Poyga in Burkina Faso.

A historic moment: For the first time ever, Ireland convicts a case of female genital mutilation

On the 28th of November 2019, a court in Ireland ruled its very first sentence on female genital mutilation (FGM). A couple has been accused of organising and tolerating the mutilation of their daughter who had been one year old at the time of execution. This is the first time such a case has been prosecuted since the implementation of the Criminal Justice (Female Genital Mutilation) Act in 2012 which criminalises the execution of FGM on Irish residents, within Ireland and abroad.

On 18th  and 19th November 2019 the partner organizations Federatie Somalische Associaties Nederland (FSAN), Equilibres & Populations (Equipop), Plan International Deutschland (Plan) und TERRE DES FEMMES (TDF) met in Amsterdam to reflect on the first year of the Let’s CHANGE Project and to plan the second year. The meeting was hosted by FSAN and chaired by TDF.

On the eve of the International Day of the Girl Child, TERRE DES FEMMES invited journalists and media to talk about the increasing prevalence of female genital mutilation (FGM) in Europe and Germany. FGM is a global phenomenon that constitutes a severe violation of the human rights of girls and women worldwide. Those affected oftentimes suffer long-term physical and psychological damages.

TERRE DES FEMMES urgently calls for action: awareness and sensitization on female genital mutilation, through projects such as Let’s CHANGE, is more important than ever!
