Let’s CHANGE Advocacy Meeting in the European Parliament – Community Activists Call on Politicians

On the occasion of the international Day „Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation”, the partner organisations of the Let’s CHANGE project organised an advocacy meeting in the European Parliament on February 4th, 2020. The meeting has been supported by various members of the European Parliament.

All project partners travelled to Brussels from their home countries and were each accompanied by a team of two CHANGE Agents or CHANGE Trainers in order to ask politicians for effective measures to end female genital mutilation (FGM). The advocacy meeting was held by Dr. Pierette Herzberger-Fofana MEP (Greens/EFA), Frances Fitzgerald MEP (EPP), Hilde Vautmans MEP (Renew Europe) and Marisa Matias (GUE/NGL).

Photo: © TERRE DES FEMMES 2020On Friday, 24th of January 2020, the department of female genital mutilation (FGM) invited a class from the Berlin Diesterweg high school to the TDF head office. The 10th graders met with department assistant Lovina Okonkwo to discuss the various aspects of FGM. The students and their teacher already dealt with the subject in their philosophy lessons. The class now wanted to gain a deeper insight into the work of TERRE DES FEMMES against FGM. Furthermore, they wanted to exchange possibilities of student’s engagement.

Start of the Training Program for CHANGE Mediators in the “Men Standing Up for Gender Equality” project

On Saturday, the 18th of January 2020, the first training for the CHANGE Mediators took place in the head office of TERRE DES FEMMES (TDF) in Berlin. The training program is integrated in the EU co-funded project “Men Standing Up for Gender Equality” and aims at enabling men from migrant communities to work as so-called CHANGE Mediators. As such, they question concepts of masculinity and gender roles and further sensitise their own communities about gender-based violence. The project aims at committing more men to fight against female genital mutilation (FGM) and early and forced marriage (EFM) as forms of gender-based violence and to provoke a change of thought within affected communities.

Responding to Female Genital Mutilation – TERRE DES FEMMES organises FGM training for key professionals

On the 13th Dec 2019, TERRE DES FEMMES hosted the first of two planned vocational trainings for key professionals at the head office in Berlin. CHANGE Trainer Isatou Barry from the Let’s CHANGE project, and Dr. Idah Nabateregga, policy expert of female genital mutilation (FGM) at TDF, conveyed basic knowledge about FGM, as well as the necessary competences on how to deal with affected girls and women and what to do in situations of potential risk. Participants were mainly coming from the social sector.

A historic moment: For the first time ever, Ireland convicts a case of female genital mutilation

On the 28th of November 2019, a court in Ireland ruled its very first sentence on female genital mutilation (FGM). A couple has been accused of organising and tolerating the mutilation of their daughter who had been one year old at the time of execution. This is the first time such a case has been prosecuted since the implementation of the Criminal Justice (Female Genital Mutilation) Act in 2012 which criminalises the execution of FGM on Irish residents, within Ireland and abroad.
