On Monday, 20th May 2019, the department of female genital mutilation welcomed a group of international youth and human rights organisations to meet and present their project “Standing Up 2 FGM” in the head office of TERRE DES FEMMES. „Standing Up 2 FGM“ is a project funded through the Erasmus+ program of the European Union and has as its aim to educate and sensitise workers in European NGOs about FGM. Among the attending organisations at that meeting were institutions and associations from Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, Great Britain and Germany who will undergo a number of workshops and trainings on how to deal with people affected by female genital mutilation. Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a widely practised tradition and a severe violation of human rights that affects at least 200 million girls and women in more than 30 countries. In Europe, too, statistics of the European Parliament in 2009 estimate that approximately 500.000 women and girls are affected and further 180.00 are at risk of undergoing FGM. In Germany, even though FGM is explicitly prohibited since 2016, the practise is continued due migration of affected communities. According to the latest estimations by TERRE DES FEMMES around 65.000 affected women and girls live in Germany. Another 15.500 girls are at risk of genital mutilation. However, many people in Germany are not aware of these high numbers and only a few of them are adequately educated and sensitised on the topic. Especially key professionals from relevant subject areas like health and social services usually lack enough knowledge and capabilities to deal with affected people.

As the start of the nationwide sensitisation campaign “Mein Körper -Unversehrt und Selbstbestimmt”, TERRE DES FEMMES has co-hosted a press conference and panel talk at the Haus der Demokratie und Menschenrechte in Berlin on the 7th of May 2019, the worldwide day of genital autonomy (WWDOGA). TDF, MOGiS e.V. and Projekt 100% MENSCH invited press representatives and the general public to talk about the subject of their new campaign. The campaign opposes all kinds of genital mutilation on children and aims to raise societal awareness about this issue.

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) as well as male circumcision or male genital mutilation (MGM) and forced genital allocations on intersexual children violate the child’s right of bodily integrity. The panel consisted of FGM policy expert Charlotte Weil (TERRE DES VEMMES), Victor Schiering (MOGiS e.V.), Holger Edmaier (Projekt 1005 Mensch), Katharina Vater (InTra* counselling at Projekt 100% Mensch) and Seyran Ates (lawyer and founder of Ibn-Rushd-Goethe mosque).
