PROGRAMME AND EVENTS DURING THE FILM FESTIVAL

Film Opening of the Festival at Museum Cinema
Opening with the screening of the film „Real
Women have Curves“ by Patricia Cardoso, Museum Cinema.
A young Mexican girl living in the US. produces clothes in a sweat
shop, but would love study at a University. She daringly questions
the traditional ideas of her Mexican family with respect to her
feminine role, as well as the US-fashion: this proclaims the appearance
of a skinny model as the highest aspiration of a young woman.
Afterwards opening party with live music by „Cántaro“,
Restaurant Kelter.

Photo Exhibition on the films „Frauen aus Kabul“ and
„Borinboresi“,
at Schlatterhaus, Großer Saal
Photographs of unveiled women, poems by afghan women writers and
children’s paintings tell about danger and threats, but also
about hopes and dreams for the future.
Warm and intense colours express the Nankana women’s high
spirit and strength. Together the women from Ghana paint their clay
brick houses while singing, dancing and tale-telling.

Vernissage at Schlatterhaus, Großer Saal
Opening of the exhibition together with the directors and photographers.
Afterwards we will celebrate with a glass of Prosecco for all guests.

Round Table Discussion on “Women’s rights in regions
of conflict- a cineastic look”, at Schlatterhaus, Großer
Saal
The visiting film directors discuss how women are especially affected
by current crises in different regions of the world. They talk about
what aspects they emphasize in their films and what they wish to
convey through them. Special attention will be paid to alternative
peace strategies brought forward by women.
16.11. 2003 8.00pm
German Premiere „Silent Waters“, Museum Cinema.
Pakistani director Sabiha Sumar’s film was awarded the Golden
Leopardo in Locarno. It tells the story ofthe widow Ayesha. She
is leading a quiet and peaceful life in Pakistan, but when her son
Saleem joins an Islamic fundamentalist group everything is falling
apart. Her long-hidden secret is revealed which goes backto the
times of the separation between Pakistan and India.
The director will be present. Afterwards premiere party, restaurant
Kelter.
25. 11. 2003 6.00pm
International Day “NO to violence against women”
Screening of „In the Time of the Butterflies“, Arsenal
Cinema
A drama about the three Mirabal sisters (with Salma Hayek in the
leading role), murdered because of their participation in the resistance
against dictator Trujillo from the Dominican Republic. The 25th
of November is dedicated to the Mirabal sisters as the International
Day ”NO to violence agaiinst women .
Afterwards encounter in the Arsenal foyer
